Final Letter from a Cat 2017

Cats are animals of quiet communication. Not even once have they meowed to me during this project. But instead, they left a note before and after eating the cat food I layed out for them.

These animals are not home-bread. The writers of these letters are wild street cats living on the terrace of an apartment in Korea.

Presentation Catcept

Practically,
- at the end of semester, I want to show motion-signal receptor and digital skin visualizer
- inside a confined environment like in a room, with a construction of motion detectors/sensors, I want to simulate the visual skin of an animal a.k.a. fur according to the motion input

Realistically,

Simultaneously,
- I evaluated that this idea of DIGITAL SKIN + MOTION DETECT seems quite complex to complete in 7 weeks

- to accelerate this process, borrow KINECT instead of constructing one

Animation and the text illustrate how communication between animals can be applied to communication between animals and humans. For this to happen, I need information / signal receiver / decoding / medium / response.

When received by another animal, this information undergoes decoding, ... Week 8 trail and error

My secret desire is to live with 100 cats, ranging from mechanical cat, biological cat, sentient cat, smart cat, fat cat, dumb cat, cute cat, old cat, AI cat, sick cat, and baby cat

Visually, I need a CATcept image, surrounded by 100 cats and 1 human

Experimentally,
-use halloween
-visit 유기묘 센터 in 마산
-film alternate cats (shadows that people make during the night are like cats)

Week 6 or 7 - Visualization

If subways were a living Ball of fur, (무도회) 

If commuters were feline creatures, CATmuters

Scary cats take over Halloween. 

This visualization reminds African masks, Japanese anime.

As my senses go through a cat, freedom and mystery of the night opens up. But also the risk of getting road-killed outside after on the streets rise up. 

Week5 - Experiment

The keyboard I assumed was mechanical was not at all mechanical - no circuit board. When I took it apart, it had layers of membranes.

The only circuit board I managed to find was this little guy, which I think I can recycle but don't know how to. 

 

So I sought of ways to connect the membrane to my computer and bought a connector for mini DIN and usb port, which seems useless still.

what can I do next? I think i actually need to buy a mechanical keyboard (up to 180,000 won). But before that, I still want to get to know circuit boards. So I bought a uno kit from Arduino.

Week 3 _ Design for semi - distance

CATcept text 10 scenarios

1. If my senses go through my cat, it means open sesame to freedom and mystery of the night. Also permission to be outside after curfew on the streets. 
2. If my tongue does what cats' tongues do--grooming--would I groom myself using my tongue? 
3. If the violin were made out of catgut, what if cats can play the instrument through senses? How?
4. If my cat interacts with motion sensors and show visuals, what would it express? Why? 
5. If cats still have hunting instincts left, which body motion can I mimic and why?
6. As disconnected and lonely it gets in modern world,  cats seem like independent enough animals for pets. Does the demographical change--more people living alone--also effect the kind of pet people have? 
7. When a cat lady dies alone in a house, all the cats she has taken care of will jump up and eat her up. Is this honorable? 
8. Cats and witches are inseparable. If witches become cats, what more evil can be done? 
9. If cats had microphones attached to them and recorded every sound they made, what images can the computer show?
